This one-day axe making experience is a brilliant gift idea for anyone who’s ever been curious about blacksmithing. It’s immersive, exciting and completely satisfying, the kind of day they’ll talk about for years to come.
The day is split into three main parts. First, they'll work in pairs using the traditional smith and striker technique to shape red-hot steel into an axe head. It’s a proper team effort and a great bonding activity, especially for groups. Next comes heat treatment, turning that forged head into a strong, durable tool. Finally, it’s time to haft the axe, which means shaping and fitting the handle so it's ready for use. By the end of the day, they’ll walk away with a fully working hand axe they made themselves.
It’s also a great experience for people who’ve tried forging before and want to level up, with the option to tackle something more advanced like a bearded axe. Historical re-enactors can even make a blunt fighting axe if they prefer.
All tools, materials and safety equipment are included, so there’s nothing to bring except a good dose of enthusiasm. It’s a full-on, unforgettable day that makes a brilliant gift for birthdays.
