Things To Do in Shropshire in Spring

happy, smiling passengers on board the sabrina river cruise boat

We might be biased, but Shropshire is one of the most beautiful counties in the country and with all the amazing things to do in Shropshire, you could spend a lifetime here!

A fun fact about this delightful county is that we have the tallest column in the world! Lord Hill's column in Shrewsbury stands at 133ft 6 inches tall and is a memorial to Lord Hill who played a crucail role in key battles such as Waterloo.

So come over to Shropshire and fill your boots this Easter with a range of activites for you and the whole family.

Water Sports on the River Severn

If these past few weeks in April have been anything to go by, then we are on for a brilliant late Spring…and my goodness we deserve it after the last few years! Remember how cold it was in August!!

Tours on the River Severn are the perfect way to embrace the Spring weather as you get the choice to go canoeing, float on a mini raft, kayaking, or floating on a mega paddle board!

You and up to 2 others can hire a canoe and have the best day paddling down the River Severn. Starting at Coalport, Ironbridge you’ll float along for 7 miles before finishing at Bridgnorth.

It’s the same duration for the mini raft, kayaking and mega SUP but the amount of people differ. The mini raft holds between 2 and 5 people with 2 adults per raft and a minimum age of 4.

The kayaks are 2/3 people and the mega paddle board is between 5-8 people with a minimum age of 10.

Shrewsbury River Cruise and Afternoon Tea

If being on the water more than in it is something you’d prefer, then a boat ride down the River Severn is a must for anyone looking for things to do in Shropshire. Set sail on a river cruise in Shrewsbury where you can see Shrewsbury’s tourist spots, all whilst enjoying the outdoors.

The cruises depart every hour and you are given entertaining commentary by the captains on the boat which inform you about a lot of local knowledge and history.

There are drinks and snacks on board but with an afternoon tea at the nearby Orchard Café ready and waiting, don’t fill up too much!

Jackfield Tile Museum & Ironbridge Hotel Stay

Discover a hidden gem of British design heritage at Jackfield, once the beating heart of the UK’s tile-making industry. Step inside the historic factory where Craven Dunnill once operated and uncover the fascinating processes behind tile production and decoration that shaped interiors across the globe.

Extend your visit with a trip to the Footprint Gallery in Fusion, where local artists create and exhibit their work in open studios. It's the perfect spot to witness creativity in action and maybe even take home a piece of it.

You can then relax with a hotel stay in Ironbridge at a Georgian listed country house on the banks of the River Severn with a lovely breakfast included.

Disused Prison Tour

Take a gruesome trip through history and visit the old prison site where the Victorian jail was in used up until 2013.

Whether you fancy a guided prison tour with an ex-prison officer, a self-guided tour at your own pace, a prison break experience or a night behind bars, we have it all at this famous spot.

The tours really give you a chance to explore the prison and find out what life was like as not just an inmate, but as a prison guard too.

The prison break experience is an escape room with a difference as you try and outsmart The Cell, all in the ‘comfort’ of the disused prison and cells!

Make Your Own Gin

For a different kind of day out when looking for things to do in Shropshire, you would be foolish not to give this experience a try!

Head over to Telford where you and up to 5 friends can learn all about the world of gin and how to make your own.

You’ll have 60 botanicals to choose from and by operating the copper still, you will make a 700ml bottle of gin to take home! Not bad for a day’s work!
